“Summer Day” is the 6th song of the (current) version of Octets. This is the 6th blog post! Shout-out to parallelism!
Writing Summer Day took a concentrated, almost formulaic approach; two adjectives that are typically the antithesis to my personality.
I did a boatload of research into iambic pentameter and Shakespearean sonnets in order to capture a relationship between two characters that is simultaneously earnest and idealized.
I feel especially connected to the song now more than ever, not because of any brewing Shakespearean romance (hahaha YIKES), but because I find myself constantly suspended between chasing down a dream and struggling with reality.
At the beginning of the summer, I set out to accomplish a number of things.
I wanted to put pen to paper for a myriad of different show ideas that had been fermenting in my mind for months.
I wanted to improve myself as a person, both mentally and physically (which I had DEFINITELY been neglecting for a while)
I wanted to complete a bunch of Octets-related projects to assemble a nice, full portfolio.
Here’s what actually happened:
I scratched the surface of some research for a new show, but ultimately have not started actually writing anything new.
I DEFINITELY forgot to breathe and smell the flowers and take care of myself at certain points.
We managed to record (almost) every song from Octets and we’ve created a website, but I had to push back a number of other deadlines due to some ~over-zealous~ planning on my part.
Both as an artist and a person, I had my good days, and bad days, and productive days, and not so productive days, and all the kinds of days in between.
“Summer Day” is a phrase that invokes a bright, smiling sun, shining down upon a world teeming with happiness and life.
In reality, however, some days are hot and sticky and unpleasant.
Some days, there are loud thunderstorms.
Sometimes, droughts last for weeks on end.
But every once in a while there is a perfect day. And those are nice.
Long story short, my summer is coming to a close, and on the whole, it has reminded me of a Summer Day.
P.S. we have some new music coming out in the next couple weeks so stay tuned!
